Our guide shows you how to experience the lake in a brand-new way, from the (almost secret) top beach for family activities to the most unique sightseeing for any enthusiast looking for the best things to do in Kelowna and the Okanagan!
Immerse Yourself in the Okanagan Lifestyle
Kelowna is all about that "vacation vibe." Even the locals feel like a day on the water or in the mountains is a staycation! There’s so much to see and appreciate, it never gets old. So, what if we told you, curious visitor or seasoned local, that while the views never get old, we’ve found a way to make them brand new? Never has BC been able to see the water the way we see the water! And now we can let you in on the fun and the secret.
Let’s get into it!
While many visitors and locals spend their days touring the valley’s vineyards, dining at world-renowned restaurants, or trying to beat the crowds on popular beaches, we thought we’d share some tips for a quiet escape or an epic family day. Our top pick is an oasis just 10 minutes from downtown, it has amenities and activities for everyone, without the crowds and boat traffic.
We’re talking about Sutherland Bay Park! So, how are we making the experience at Sutherland Bay Park brand new, and what makes us different? Okanagan Clear Watercraft Rentals is the proud host of BC’s exclusive Clear Tandem Kayak and Clear Paddleboard rentals.
When you are on a clear watercraft, the water doesn't just surround you—it becomes part of the experience. It is a completely different way to enjoy the Kelowna sun and water, and it is quickly becoming the must-do activity for anyone visiting the Okanagan this summer. Our clear watercraft allow you to glide over the lakebed, giving you a clear view of the aquatic life and geography that you simply can't see from a traditional watercraft.
Booking with us means you’re not just arriving at a launch —you’re spending the afternoon in one of Kelowna’s most versatile waterfront gems! Sutherland Bay Park has everything you need for your day of adventure, and onsite access to the boat launch couldn’t be easier—we’ll get you on the water in minutes!
Before or after your paddle: The park is perfect to lounge on the sandy beach or spread out a blanket in the large grassy picnic area to eat and relax in the shade of the trees. Enjoy the lake breeze; there is plenty of room for everyone to play lawn games, chase little ones, or even take a light nap! Yes, we said nap!
Park Amenities: Additionally, you’ll love that the park is fully equipped with onsite washrooms, a large playground for the kids, plenty of street parking, and a beach dog park (located on the opposite side of the park from the sandy beach; please note, dogs are not permitted in or on the clear watercraft).
Sutherland Bay Park is also perfectly positioned right across from Knox Mountain Park, creating an incredible loop for sightseeing and adventure. Before or after your clear watercraft session, you are just steps away from one of the best outdoor hubs in the valley:
Hiking & Sightseeing: Knox Mountain offers breathtaking views of the lake and valley that are essential for any Kelowna bucket list. It is famous for its panoramic sights, including three primary lookout pavilions—the Crown Lookout, the Pioneer Pavilion, and the Apex Lookout—each offering a different, breathtaking perspective.
Pro Tip: You can reach the Crown and Pioneer viewpoints by car during the summer months, but if you’re up for a bit of a challenge, the hike to the Apex Lookout is well worth the effort for the most expansive view in the city. Beyond the trails, the park is a hub for local fun, including disc golf and a large off-leash dog park, making it easy to keep the whole family (and your furry friends) entertained.
Wait… there’s more! Visit Paul’s Tomb: Hike or Paddle?
Whether you're hitting the trails or heading out on the water, Paul’s Tomb is a must-visit Kelowna landmark.
By Foot: Enjoy a scenic 3km round-trip hike through Knox Mountain Park. It’s a beautiful trek, but plan for 45–60 minutes each way and remember to pack plenty of water for the summer heat.
By Water: Skip the uphill climb and launch from Sutherland Bay Park. It’s a relaxed 2.5–3km paddle north along the shoreline. At a leisurely sightseeing pace, you'll reach the secluded cove in about 45–60 minutes (each way), arriving directly at the beach for a refreshing swim.
Pro Tip: Why hike in the heat when you can glide over the lake? Our clear watercraft offer the best view of the shoreline, turning a long walk into the perfect water adventure.
Accessibility & Skill Level: Is Paul’s Tomb Right for You?
We want everyone to enjoy Kelowna’s hidden gems, but it’s important to know the terrain before you head out:
The Hiking Trail: While the trail to Paul’s Tomb is a popular "green" (easy) rated gravel path, it is not universally accessible.
For Small Kids: It is doable for school-aged children, but parents should know it involves steady elevation changes. It is not always suitable for strollers due to some of the gravel surface and steep sections.
For Mobility Concerns: The trail is generally not suitable for those with limited mobility or those who require paved, flat surfaces, as there are areas of uneven ground and moderate slopes.
Summer Reality: In the heat of July and August, the trail is very exposed. Even an "easy" hike can become difficult for little ones if they get overheated, so if you want to bring the little ones, early morning starts are a must.
The Water Route (Clear Kayaks & Clear Paddleboards): Paddling to the cove is often the preferred choice for those who want a more relaxing experience.
Skill Level: This is a fantastic trip for beginners, provided they are comfortable on the water and have basic paddling knowledge.
For Small Kids: Children can absolutely join in! If they are in Our Clear Tandem Kayak riding along with a parent(s), it’s a wonderful adventure. Just ensure everyone is wearing the properly fitted PFD (life jacket) we’ve provided and that you stay close to the shoreline.
Accessibility: While kayaking requires more physical upper-body movement than walking, many guests find the "glide" across the water much less punishing on the joints than a trek through the hills.
If you are looking for the best Kayak and Paddleboard rental and unique water activity, skip the crowded sightseeing tours. Instead, get closer to the lakebed with Clear Watercrafts from Okanagan Clear Watercraft Rentals. We’re the answer to memorable family activities that break away from the usual tourist traps. Our clear watercraft are a hit for all ages—it’s an active, engaging way to spend the afternoon that combines the physical fun of paddle sports with a unique, "see-through" perspective of the lake. It is the kind of experience that makes for the best vacation photos and the best memories.
